Shell Lake, the lake, is probably the City's
most noted attraction.
The 2,580 acre lake has a reputation as being
one of the cleanest, finest lakes to be found anywhere. It
is a wonderful lake for fishing, sailing, boating, or swimming.
In addition to Shell Lake, 42 acre Round Lake is also within the
City's limits.
The headwaters for Sawyer Creek, a Class A
trout stream, are also located within the City.

•Boat Landings - The primary boat
landing is located near downtown adjacent to the municipal
campground. It is paved and has plenty of paved parking for
vehicles and trailers. There is a dock which boats may be
launched or recovered from either side - mooring your boat is not
allowed. There is, however, no marina or fueling
facilities on the lake, so fill your tank before you
launch.
•Boat launch fees - Shell Lake is
known as one of the cleanest lakes in northern Wisconsin. It
is also free of invasive plant and animal species, such as
Eurasian water milfoil and zebra mussels. To help keep it this
way, the city
performs boat inspections prior to boats being launched at the
Main Landing. To help defray the
cost of these inspections,
a new Boat Launch Fee has been introduced. The fees are
$5 per day, or $20 per season (2009). A boat
launched in the spring and left in all season would only pay for a
single launch. See Shell Lake Boat Landing FAQ's for more information.
There
are two other non-paved boat landing without docks on the lake -
one in the South Bay on South Lake Drive near the intersection of
Hwy 63 and County Hwy D. The other is located on the north
side of the lake off North Lake Drive. Several public
walk-in accesses are also available. Please note that trailered
boats may not be launched at any landing other than the
Main Landing near the campground!
•Sailing
- There are several sailboat
regattas held on the lake each summer under direction of the Shell
Lake Sailing Club. So you don't want to race - that's fine,
Shell lake is a great place to sail anytime during the summer.
The Sailing Club's web site is
http://shelllakesailingclub.org:80/ .

•Fishing
- The lake is known for its
abundant walleye, but you will also find Muskie, Northern Pike,
Large and Small Mouth Bass, and Pan Fish. Round Lake, which
has a single non-paved public access, has Walleye, Largemouth Bass
and Pan Fish.

•Public Beach
- The City operates
a municipal beach near the foot of Main Street in Memorial Park.
The beach includes a dock and swimming rafts, and is staffed with
life guards during the summer months. Located near the
swimming area is new (2004) playground equipment.
See the picture below showing the beach and playground equipment. Swimming lessons are available - please call City Hall at (715)
468-7679 for more information.

•Memorial Park
- In addition to
the beach and playground, Memorial Park is home to a historic log
enclosed shelter house with fireplace, along with an open shelter
provided by the Lions Club. There is a rental fee to use the
enclosed shelter house. There are plenty of picnic tables, benches
and cooking grills, and there is drinking water. The park is a
great location for your family reunions, parties, weddings, etc. -
Call City Hall at (715) 468-7679 for more information or to book
the shelter house. In the picture above, the shelter house
is just off to the right, and the Lions shelter is just behind the
photographer.

•Shell Lake Pavilion
- Located
between Memorial Park and the Municipal Campground, the Lakefront
Pavilion
includes a covered performing arts stage (great for outdoor
concerts), modern restrooms, and concession areas. The
building is available to rent for any occasion by calling City
Hall at (715) 468-7679. The restrooms are available for use
anytime by users of the beach and Memorial Park. See the
Pavilion Events page for more
information about upcoming events at the Pavilion.
